Pallet rack collapse isn’t a theoretical risk. It happens. When it does, the consequences extend well beyond damaged products. American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) recommend annual pallet rack inspections for any facility using racking systems, and OSHA holds employers directly responsible for maintaining a safe system. Why Facilities Call Us
Most facilities reach out for one of two reasons.
The first is a safety department decision. A new safety officer comes on board, OSHA updates its requirements, or leadership decides it’s time to formalize what’s been handled informally. The second is visible damage: a forklift impact that bent an upright, beams that are starting to look wrong, or racking that’s been modified in ways nobody can fully account for.
Neither is the wrong reason to call. But waiting for visible damage means the risk is already present.
What We Find
Facilities are often surprised by what a thorough pallet rack safety inspection turns up. Not because the damage is hidden, but because it’s become part of the background.
We’ve walked into facilities where uprights were bent so far out of plumb it was hard to believe the rack was still standing. We’ve found beams so overloaded they were structurally bowed – what the industry calls smiling. We’ve documented homemade repairs that provided no structural support for the rack above them.
In one case, we were mid-inspection when the customer cancelled. A few days later, an upright buckled. The rack was loaded with stamps and dies. A forklift had previously struck the front of the upright, leaving a dent that compromised its ability to carry the load above it. When it went, it all came down. The customer called us immediately to complete the inspection. We sourced and installed column guards throughout the facility.
The damage that causes collapses is usually detectable before the collapse happens. That’s the point of the inspection.
When we do find damage, customers don’t always move as quickly as we’d like. Extensive inspection reports sometimes get addressed in stages. That’s a practical reality, but one worth understanding before the inspection begins.
How Often Inspections Should Happen
ANSI and RMI standards recommend a professional pallet rack inspection once per year. That annual visit establishes a documented baseline: what’s in place, what’s damaged, and what needs to be addressed.
Between professional inspections, facilities should be conducting their own regular checks. The most proactive customers walk their racking monthly. At minimum, management or safety staff should do a walk-through no less than quarterly. A forklift impact that gets logged and reported is far less dangerous than once that gets ignored.

Includes everything in the Enhanced tier plus an engineered drawing of your storage system that corresponds to the damage inspection sheets, and a full spreadsheet report of all system components and their specifications. The Expert inspection gives facilities the complete picture: documented, engineered, and actionable.
